Stratford boys basketball surges in second half to win at Newman Catholic

WAUSAU – Stratford overcame a two-point halftime deficit to defeat Wausau Newman Catholic 50-41 in a Marawood Conference South Division boys basketball game Monday night at Newman Catholic High School.

Newman led 23-21 at halftime before the Tigers got things together and outscored the Cardinals (1-7, 0-5 Marawood South) by 11 points in the second half to pull away.

Drew Bruesewitz had 18 points, and Alec Chapel finished with 13 points and six rebounds for Stratford (6-1, 4-1 Marawood South).

The Tigers shot only 32 percent from the field (14-for-43), but made eight 3-pointers in the victory.

Stratford will host its annual holiday tournament Friday and Saturday. Fall River takes on Owen-Withee at 5:30 p.m. Friday, with Stratford playing Manawa afterwards. The two losers play Saturday at 5:30 p.m., with the championship to follow at approximately 7:15 p.m.
