LA CROSSE – Auburndale senior Colton Weiler kept his undefeated season going by winning the boys individual title at 150 pounds at the Bi-State Wrestling Classic, which was held Friday and Saturday at the La Crosse Center.
Weiler (21-0) defeated Brock Hinderman of Iowa-Grant/Highland 4-0 in the championship match at 150 and was the lone local wrestler to win a title at the two-day tournament that featured 69 teams from Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Two Marshfield wrestlers and another from Spencer/Columbus Catholic/Granton earned titles in the girls tournament.
Marshfield’s Caleb Dennee and Stratford’s Carter Lueck both had their unbeaten streaks this season end with championship bout losses.
Dennee (22-1) fell to Eli Leonhard of Mount Horeb/Barneveld 8-6 in the 175-pound championship match, while Lueck (18-1) lost the title match at 190 to Ben Kienbaum of Kiel, 9-4.
Marshfield’s Jon Sternweis (20-3) also lost a championship match as he was shut out by Alois Schlumpf of Bay Port in the 126-pound final, 7-0.
Marshfield finished second in the Division 1 team standings behind Holmen, while Stratford took fifth and Auburndale sixth in the Division 3 team standings. Spencer/Columbus Catholic/Granton, which did not have a boys wrestler place in the top 12 in any weight class, took 23rd place in Division 2.
Trenton Cournoyer took fourth at 120 pounds and Kolton Haupt finished seventh at 106 for Stratford; Auburndale’s Derek Godard (120) and Zade Grassel (126) each placed sixth; and Marshfield’s Grayden Rode (157) and Brok Carolfi (285) both took eighth place.
In the girls tournament, Marshfield’s Ava Gardner (107) and Erika Sleznikow (126), along with Spencer/Columbus Catholic/Granton’s Azariah Hoffmann (145) were champions.
Gardner (13-2) pinned Macy Schaefer of Zumbrota-Mazeppa (Minn.) in 1:33; Sleznikow (11-0) pinned Kit Alsaker of Waunakee in 3:03; and Hoffmann (15-1) pinned Sophia Paulson of La Crosse Aquinas in 3:59 to earn individual titles as 74 girls teams competed.
Spencer/Columbus Catholic/Granton’s Anna Becker placed seventh at 235 pounds, and Auburndale’s Jasmine Hebert was eighth at 138.
