Spencer boys basketball player Sam Bezlyk has been voted the Schierl Tire and Auto Service High School Athlete of the Month for December.
MarshfieldAreaSports.com & Zaleski Sports co-sponsor the award, which is in its 12th year.
Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award, which will be given out monthly from September 2024 through June 2025: Abbotsford, Assumption, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Mosinee, Neillsville, Pacelli, Pittsville, Port Edwards, Spencer, Stratford, Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln.
Bezlyk received 4,317 of the nearly 10,000 votes cast during voting from Jan. 2-8 at MarshfieldAreaSports.com.
Other nominees for the December award were: Pittsville girls basketball player Reese Grimm, Marshfield boys basketball player Brooks Hinson, Assumption girls basketball player Jordyn Jaglinski and Auburndale wrestler Colton Weiler.
Bezlyk, a junior forward, had six double-doubles (double digits in points and rebounds) in seven games in December for the Rockets, who head into the new year with a 6-2 record. Bezlyk had a career-high 38 points and pulled down 20 rebounds in a win over Northland Lutheran on Dec. 2, and 25 points and 12 rebounds in a victory over Tomahawk on Dec. 28 as Spencer won the Tomahawk Holiday Tournament.
Bezlyk joins Abbotsford football player Christian Fuentes (September), Stratford volleyball player Kalyn Schueller (October) and Marshfield girls basketball player Zaida Kolbeck (November) as a winner of the Schierl Tire Athlete of the Month award during the 2024-25 school year.
