LOYAL – The Spencer boys basketball team fought back from a five-point deficit late in the game to defeat Loyal 48-47 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division matchup Thursday night at Loyal High School.
Spencer trailed 47-42 before Sam Bezlyk hit two free throws with 2:39 to go, sparking a 6-0 run to end the game.
Bezlyk hit two more free throws with 1:59 remaining and he put home a basket off an offensive rebound with 1:08 left to give the Rockets a 48-47 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the way, with the game ending on a missed 3-point attempt from the Greyhounds.
Bezlyk had another monster double-double for the Rockets, scoring 25 points and hauling down 17 rebounds in the victory.
Spencer is now 11-5 overall and 5-3 in the Cloverbelt East, tied with Loyal (11-4, 5-3 Cloverbelt East) and Neillsville for third place behind co-leaders Marshfield Columbus Catholic and Owen-Withee. Loyal, which started the season 11-0, has now lost four straight.
Spencer’s next game is Tuesday at Colby.
