Auburndale girls basketball tops Athens in Marawood crossover

AUBURNDALE – Auburndale opened up a double-digit lead by halftime and cruised to a 47-33 win over Athens in a Marawood Conference girls basketball crossover game Friday night at Auburndale High School.

The Eagles pulled out to a 31-17 lead by halftime and maintained a solid lead the rest of the way, improving to 18-4 overall and 12-3 in the Marawood South.

Auburndale knocked down seven 3-pointers, three from Taylor Anderson, who led the Eagles with 12 points.

Itzel Espinoza had nine points to lead Athens (2-18, 2-13 Marawood North).

Auburndale will host Marshfield Columbus Catholic for a nonconference game on Monday before finishing its regular-season schedule at Marathon on Thursday.

The WIAA playoff brackets will be announced on Sunday.
