WAUTOMA – Eight local girls wrestlers are moving on sectionals after earning top-four finishes at a WIAA girls wrestling regional at Wautoma High School on Friday.
Stratford, Marshfield, Spencer/Columbus Catholic/Granton and Auburndale each had two wrestlers finish in the top four of their respective weight classes to move on to a WIAA sectional at Eau Claire North on Friday, Feb. 21.
Marshfield’s Ava Gardner and Erika Sleznikow, and Spencer/Columbus Catholic/Granton’s Azariah Hoffman and Anna Becker won regional titles.
Gardner (30-2) pinned Madison Wagner of Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards in 54 seconds in the 107-pound final, while Sleznikow (28-0) continued her undefeated season with a pin in 2:45 of Isabelle Brockman of Wisconsin Rapids in the 126-pound championship for Marshfield.
Hoffman (33-4) pinned Katelyn Nosbisch of Black River Falls in 1:20 to win the 145-pound title, and Becker (26-8) won the only match of the 235-pound bracket, pinning Morgan Gormanson of Wisconsin Rapids in 1:44 for the Rockets.
Also moving on to sectionals are Auburndale’s Valencia de la Torre and Jasmine Hebert, and Stratford’s Hailey Fecker and Wynn Schoenherr.
De la Torre (29-12) placed second at 132 pounds and Herbert (38-12) finished second at 138, and both earned second-place wrestleback wins.
Fecker placed third at 100 pounds and Schoenherr fourth at 132 to also qualify for sectionals.
