EDGAR – Stratford won the team title and earned 10 sectional berths at a WIAA Division 3 wrestling regional at Edgar High School on Saturday.
Trenton Cournoyer, Jack Tubbs and Carter Lueck won individual titles for Stratford, which racked up 274.5 points to win the regional title and advance to a D-3 team sectional at Clear Lake on Tuesday.
Glenwood City edged Auburndale by one-half point, 223-222.5, for the second sectional berth. Glenwood City will take on Cumberland and Stratford will face Turtle Lake/Clayton in the semifinals, with the winners meeting for a spot in the 2025 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison on March 7-8.
The top four in each weight class at the regional move on to a D-3 individual sectional at Ladysmith next Saturday, Feb. 22. The top three at each weight at the sectional qualify for the 2025 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which will be held Feb. 27-March 1 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Stratford and Auburndale wrestlers matched up in the finals in four weight classes with each team winning twice.
Trenton Cournoyer (48-2) won the 120-pound title with a 19-3 technical fall over Derek Godard of Auburndale, Tubbs (35-9) defeated Carter Grassl (29-14) of Auburndale 8-4 in the 175-pound finals, and Lueck (40-1) pinned Edgar’s Lucas Stahnke in 1:11 to take the championship at 190 for Stratford.
Earning regional titles for Auburndale were Zade Grassel (41-6) at 126 pounds with a 20-9 major decision over Stratford’s Colin Cournoyer (40-5) and Colton Weiler (51-0), who continued his unbeaten season with a pin of Stratford’s Mathias Kaiser (37-8) to win the 150-pound final.
Kolton Haupt (32-11 at 106) also placed second for Stratford, while Lucas Forrest (33-14 at 138), Brandon Knetter (14-12 at 157) and Drew Gage (40-8 at 285) all placed third to advance in the postseason.
Carson Weiler (43-9 at 113) took second and Conner Johnson (38-14 at 144) placed third for Auburndale to also qualify for the individual sectional. Weiler lost in the finals to unbeaten Blake Underwood (45-0) of Marathon, 17-0.
