HAYWARD – Spencer/Columbus Catholic/Granton will have three wrestlers at next week’s individual sectional after they earned top-four finishes at a WIAA Division 2 regional at Hayward High School on Saturday.
Wyatt Karl won the 215-pound title to lead the way for the SCCG trio that will be moving on to a D-2 individual sectional at Amery on Saturday, Feb. 22. The top four in each weight class qualify for the sectionals, with the top three there qualifying for the 2025 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which will be held Feb. 27-March 1 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Hayward/Northwood won the team title with 251 points and Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm second with 228.5. Both move on to the D-2 team sectional at Medford on Tuesday. Spencer/Columbus Catholic/Granton finished seventh with 109.5 points.
Karl (32-10), a senior, won the 215-pound final with a pin of Riley Johnson of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm in 1:56.
Also moving on to sectionals for the Rockets are sophomore Jakob Soback and senior Teddy Meyer.
Soback (26-15) placed fourth at 190 pounds, winning a fifth-place match and a fourth-place wrestleback with a third-period pin of Kaiden Kapellusch of Tomahawk.
Meyer (32-13) finished second at 165, losing in the championship match to Jake Krager of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm by pin in 1:11.
Hayward/Northwood will face St. Croix Central and Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm will take on St. Croix Falls in the semifinals, with the winners meeting for a spot in the 2025 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison on March 7-8.
