AUBURNDALE – Marathon raced out to a big lead by halftime and sent the Auburndale boys basketball team to its second-straight loss as the Raiders won 68-58 in the regular-season and Marawood Conference South Division finale for both teams on Thursday at Auburndale High School.
Auburndale, which had its 16-game winning streak snapped by Stratford on Monday, fell behind again early and could not recover as Marathon (16-8, 12-4 Marawood South) led 38-23 at halftime.
The Eagles (21-3, 13-3 Marawood South) mounted a comeback in the second half, but Marathon was able to hold on for the 10-point win and knocked Auburndale out of first place in the conference. Stratford defeated Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Thursday to claim sole possession of the Marawood South title.
Blake Raab scored 17 points and Petyon Weinfurter added 13 for Auburndale.
Drew Woelfel topped Marathon with 21 points and True Thus added 17 as the Raiders made nine 3-pointers in the victory.
Auburndale, the No. 1 seed in its half of the Division 4 Sectional 2 bracket, will play the winner of Tuesday’s game between Colby and Crandon on Friday, March 7, at home in a regional semifinal.
