AUBURNDALE – Thomas Aue knocked in a 10-footer off an offensive rebound at the buzzer to give the Auburndale boys basketball team a thrilling 51-49 win over Marathon to claim a WIAA Division 4 regional title Saturday night at Auburndale High School.
The No. 1 seed Eagles (23-3) will take on another Marawood Conference South Division foe Stratford (24-2), the No. 2 seed, in a D-4 sectional semifinal on Thursday at Wausau West. The two teams split their regular-season meetings.
Auburndale trailed 23-21 at halftime and stayed in the game behind the 3-point shooting of Josh Lundgren, who knocked down five of nine shots from long range to finish with a team-high 20 points.
The Eagles looked for a chance to win it in the final seconds before missing a 3, but Aue gathered the rebound just off the right block and beat the buzzer with the game-winner. He finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
Blake Raab added 16 points for Auburndale.
Ean Shuda drilled five 3-pointers and scored a team-high 19 points for Marathon (17-9).
