MADISON – The Stratford wrestling team’s quest for a state title fell short as the Tigers lost a Division 3 semifinal to Mineral Point 39-23 at the 2025 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament at the University of Wisconsin Field House on Saturday.
Mineral Point won the first two matches and never trailed on its way to advancing to the Divisioin 3 championship match, which it won over Weyauwega-Fremont 32-28. The state title is Mineral Point’s sixth and first since its last appearance in 2021.
Stratford, which was making its 11th team state appearance, won titles in 2017 and 2018, and finished as the runner-up in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2016 and 2019.
Carter Lueck won by pin at 215 pounds, Trenton Cournoyer earned a 15-0 technical fall win at 120, Walker Weis (190) won 4-1, Lucas Forrest (132) was victorious 7-2, and Brandon Knetter added a forfeit win in the final match at 157 for Stratford after Mineral Point had already sewed up the victory.
Kaukauna (Division 1) and St. Croix Falls (Division 2) also won state titles on Saturday. The championship is Kaukauna’s fifth in a row and ninth overall, all coming since 2014.
