STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield boys basketball team has fallen on hard times.
After a 12-0 start to their season, the Tigers have dropped three of their last four games – the latest coming Friday night with a 54-45 setback at the hands of Stevens Point Area Senior High.
Cale Zuiker scored 23 points and Elliot Ashbeck added 16, but no other Tiger player scored more than two in the loss.
The game was tight through the first three quarters. SPASH led 13-11 after the first quarter only to see Marshfield tie it at 22-22 heading into halftime.
The Panthers opened up a four-point lead at the end of three quarters, then blew the game open with a 17-12 advantage over the final 8 minutes.
The Tigers fall to 13-4 overall and 5-4 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. SPASH, which came into the game tied with Marshfield for second place in the conference, improve to 12-5 and 6-3 in the Valley.
Marshfield hosts Lakeland in a nonconference game Tuesday before hosting D.C. Everest in a WVC game next Friday.
The Marshfield JV team lost a heartbreaker in double overtime to SPASH, 76-72.
Luke Olson had 20 points, including five 3-pointers, and Luke Zuiker added 16 points for the Tigers.
Marshfield had eight different players score and drilled nine 3-pointers in the loss.
Mack Scheppler had nine points, Isaac Accola and Ben Satter each added eight and Matt Oestreich chipped in six on two 3-pointers for Marshfield.
