MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys basketball team jumped out to a quick lead, then had to hold off a second-half rally to knock off Augusta 49-44 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division game Friday night at Columbus Catholic High School.
Columbus is 11-1 in its last 12 games and improved to 13-4 overall and 12-2 in the Cloverbelt East, remaining one-half game behind first-place Colby. Augusta falls to 10-6 and 8-6 in the Cloverbelt East.
Jared Boyle, in his second game back after missing nearly two full games with an injury, had 18 points to lead the Dons. He hit two 3-pointers and was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter as Columbus put the game away.
Columbus led 26-14 at halftime before the Beavers caught fire in the third quarter. Matt Grunewald scored eight of his team-high 13 points in the quarter as Augusta closed to within 34-32 heading into the fourth.
Paul Selz had a pair of baskets and Boyle made one of his two 3-pointers in the fourth, in addition to his six free throws, as the Dons pulled away.
Columbus is off until next Thursday when it plays at Owen-Withee.
