Big opening inning leads Marshfield baseball to home win over Medford

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield baseball team scored six times in the first inning and held off a late rally to defeat Medford 12-7 in a nonconference game Monday at Safford Field.

Four of the first five Marshfield batters walked in the bottom of the first as the Tigers plated six runs. Tyler Kumm, Tyler Kremer and Conner Vandeberg had RBI singles in the frame.

Marshfield added two more runs in the second to take a commanding lead.

Evan Czarnezki hit a two-run homer as part of a five-run fourth inning for Medford (1-3) and hit a solo shot in the seventh, but the Tigers were able to hold on, tacking on three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Vandeberg finished with three hits, and Jakob Sadowska and Chase Robinson both had two hits for Marshfield (2-3).

Evan Calverly struck out four in 3 1/3 innings to earn the win for the Tigers.

Marshfield will open its Wisconsin Valley Conference season at Jack Hackman Field against D.C. Everest on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
