MARSHFIELD – A seventh-inning rally fell one run short as the Marshfield softball team dropped a 12-11 decision to Wausau West on Thursday at Madison Field.
The Warriors scored five times in the first inning and added four more in the third to take a 9-3 lead before Marshfield battled back.
The Tigers scored five times in the sixth inning as Lillian Griesbach had a two-run double and Madison Kraus smacked a three-run home run, cutting West’s lead to 11-9.
Wausau West tacked on a much-needed run in the top of the seventh when Taylor Deffner tripled and scored on a ground out, before Marshfield put up one more attempt at a comeback.
Griesbach nailed a single to left to score two runs to cut West’s lead to 12-11, but a double play ended the threat, sending the Tigers (7-4, 1-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference) to their second loss in a row.
Griesbach finished three hits and four RBI and Kraus also drove in four for Marshfield.
Claire Calmes had three of West’s 11 hits, and Taylor Liebelt hit a home run and drove in two in the victory.
Marshfield will play a nonconference game at Mosinee on Monday.
