MARSHFIELD – Stevens Point scored a pair of first-half goals and made it hold up, defeating Marshfield 2-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference girls soccer opener for both teams on Thursday at Heiting Community Stadium at Marshfield High School.

The Panthers (2-4 overall) struck first as Taylor Bushman scored at the 10:01 mark.

After Marshfield’s Lauren Homolka answered back with a goal just 22 seconds later, off an assist from Audrey Luedtke, Stevens Point pushed back ahead on a goal by Amelia Castleberg at the 21:57 mark.

The score held the rest of the way as Marshfield falls to 1-4-2 overall this season.

Marshfield will play a nonconference game at Chippewa Falls on Tuesday.
