Spencer outlasts Columbus Catholic in Cloverbelt East girls basketball

MARSHFIELD – Krystal Weier scored 16 points and Kyleigh Hebert added 11 to lead the Spencer girls basketball team to a 51-36 win at Marshfield Columbus Catholic on Friday night.

Spencer outscored the Dons 16-8 in the first quarter and maintained its lead throughout. The Rockets put the game away by making 11 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Spencer made 23 of 34 free throws in all, improving to 12-3 overall and 9-3 in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division. Columbus fell to 5-11 and 4-9 in the conference.

Weier and Courtney Schulz each had four points in the opening quarter as the Rockets built an early lead.

Weier was 10-for-10 from the free-throw line over the final three quarters.

Taylor Weister had nine points to lead Columbus, which shot just 12 of 51 from the field.

Spencer hosts Rib Lake on Monday and plays at Abbotsford on Tuesday in a pair of nonconference games before hosting Owen-Withee in a Cloverbelt East game on Thursday.

Columbus returns to action Thursday at Greenwood.
