WAUSAU – The Auburndale girls basketball team had a chance to take the Marawood Conference South Division by the horns Friday against first-place Wausau Newman Catholic, but now it will need some help.
The Apaches could have moved into a tie for the conference lead and won their first Marawood South title with a win, however, Newman blew past Auburndale 54-30 at Newman Catholic High School.
Newman, ranked No. 1 in this week’s Wissports.net Division 5 state poll, improves to 18-0 and 11-0 in the Marawood South. Auburndale, ranked 10th in Division 4, falls to 15-3 and 9-2 in the conference with three games remaining.
University of Wisconsin-Green Bay recruit Taylor Thomas scored 20 points for the Cardinals, who jumped out to an 18-7 lead after one quarter and never trailed after that.
Auburndale was held to 12 of 36 shooting from the field and to single digits in each quarter.
Lindsay Gotz had eight points to lead the Apaches. Liz Breu, the Marawood South’s leading scorer at 14 points a game, was held to five points.
Auburndale’s next game is Thursday at home against Pittsville.
