STRATFORD – Megan Connolly scored 20 points and Taylor Thomas has 11 points and nine rebounds as the Wausau Newman Catholic girls basketball team remained unbeaten on the season by defeating Stratford 70-31 in a Marawood Conference South Division game on Thursday night.
Newman, ranked No. 1 in this week’s Wissports.net Division 5 State Poll, improves to 19-0 and 12-0 in conference. Stratford drops to 9-10 and 4-8 in the Marawood South.
Stratford hung close early, trailing by just three at 13-10 after one quarter. From there on, the Cardinals dominated. Newman outscored the Tigers 23-6 in the second quarter and 21-2 in the third to forge ahead.
Carrie Stroetz had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Hannah Schmitt added eight points and 12 boards for the Tigers.
Stratford hosts Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Tuesday and wraps up its Marawood South schedule on Feb. 24 at home against Auburndale.
