MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls hockey team routed Tomahawk 7-2 on Thursday night in a WIAA regional final at the Marshfield Youth Ice Recreation Arena.
The Tigers (18-5) will host the winner of Friday’s Lakeland-Northland Pines game at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a WIAA sectional semifinal.
Tomahawk suffered its third loss of the season to Marshfield and ends its season with a 2-19 record.
Paige Johnson scored at the 15:07 mark of the first period and Emily Wolfe added a goal 47 seconds into the second period to give Marshfield a 2-0 lead.
Tomahawk responded with two goals in a span of 3:30 later in the second period to tie the game. Then the Tigers turned it on.
Naomi Crump and Johnson scored 16 seconds apart late in the second, and Nicole Karl scored twice and Tori Esser added another goal in the third as the Tigers won going away.
Marshfield held Tomahawk to just eight shots on goal, six saved by goalie Ashley Bauer.
“The girls came out very slow in this game and we didn’t play a team game
of hockey,” Marshfield coach Nate Sparbel said. “We have a lot of work to do between now and Tuesday if we want to be competitive with Northland Pines.”
