MADISON – All three Marshfield High School wrestlers won their preliminary round matches Thursday afternoon at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.
Marshfield’s Torin Boernke improved to 42-2 with a 17-2 technical fall victory over Cory Heid (24-14) of Kaukauna in his 135-pound first-round match.
Boernke will take on Siven Furesth (42-0) of Janesville Craig in a Division 1 quarterfinal match at approximately 6:15 p.m. Boernke and Furseth share a history at the WIAA state meet. Boernke beat Furseth for the 112-pound championship and last year, Furseth flipped things by beating Boernke for the 130-pound championship.
Two-time state champion Brad Dolezal also advanced for the Tigers, pinning Antione Davis (24-13) of Milwaukee Riverside in 3:17 in a 160-pound opening round match. Dolezal (44-0) extended his winning streak to 92 straight matches and will take on Kegan Gennrich (41-2) of Hortonville in a Division 1 quarterfinal at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Marshfield junior Justin Sternweis, making his state tournament debut, won a narrow 7-6 decision over Sami Khatib (29-3) of Appleton North in a 171-pound Division 1 preliminary match.
Sternweis (38-7) will wrestle Ben Fiers (30-6) of Holmen in a quarterfinal at approximately 7 p.m.
