ST. PAUL, Minn. – Katie Wolff, a 2009 graduate of Marshfield High School, scored 15 points and made a crucial 3-pointer late to put the Winona State University women’s basketball team ahead for good as the Warriors beat Concordia-St. Paul 63-61 in the championship game of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health Tournament on Sunday.
Wolff, a sophomore, was named to the all-tournament team, along with teammate Michelle McDonald, who scored 27 points in the championship game as was named the NCIS Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Wolff was 3 of 5 from 3-point range and added a rebound and two assists in the Warriors’ victory.
Trailing by six points with 12 minutes to go, Winona State mounted a comeback and Wolff’s 3-pointer with 7:38 to go gave the Warriors their first lead of the second half, a lead they would never relinquish.
With the victory, Winona State (21-8) earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Tournament – its second in the last three years.
The Warriors, the No. 7 seed in the Central Region, will travel to Durango, Co., for a first-round matchup with No. 2 seed Metro State (27-2) on Friday. The winner plays again Saturday against the winner of the Wayne State-Colorado Christian game. The first three rounds of the Central Region are all held at No. 1 seed Fort Lewis College in Durango, with the third round set for Monday, March 14.
