WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Liz Breu and Kelly Tomfohrde each scored 13 points to lead the Auburndale girls basketball team to a regional title as the Apaches beat Amherst 48-34 in a WIAA Division 4 regional final Saturday afternoon at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School.
Auburndale jumped out to a commanding 16-4 lead after one quarter, then used a 17-2 run in the second to pull ahead 33-6 by halftime.
Auburndale (21-3) moves on to a WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday against Marawood Conference South rival Edgar (15-9) at Wausau East High School. Edgar edged Marathon 42-41 in a regional final Saturday at Antigo. The winner of that game will play in a sectional final on March 19 at Waupaca against either Oshkosh Lourdes or Algoma for a spot in the WIAA state tournament.
The Apaches shot 18 of 40 from the field and held Amherst to just 15 of 48.
Jamiee Pitt and Shelby Serafin each had 10 points to lead the Falcons (20-4).
