WAUSAU – One year after going winless in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, the Marshfield girls soccer team needed only one game to find the win column in 2011.
Darian Molter and Maddie Smith scored goals and the Tigers did more than enough defensively to shutout Wausau West 2-0 on Tuesday at West.
Molter, a freshman, scored her first career goal on an assist from Emily Haws 6:07 into the game and Smith scored off a corner kick from Alyssa Brenner 11:08 into the second half to provide the scoring for Marshfield (1-1 overall).
Wausau West did not get a single shot on goal against the Tigers.
“This was a nice victory for the girls and especially for those who dealt with many close losses last year and a winless Valley season,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “It is nice to get the first win, but it is only the start. We need to build off this victory and show we can compete with the powers in the conference.”
Lindner said he was especially happy with the play of midfielders Smith, Haws, Emily Brix and Walker Guzowski, and the Tigers’ defense.
“For a freshman, Walker has earned more and more playing time with some aggressive and strong play. The coaching staff has been impressed with her consistency thus far in the season.
“The defense for the most part held West at bay, although there were a few lapses that could have been costly if not for some great hustle by the defensive players.”
Marshfield plays at Wausau East on Thursday and opens its home schedule Friday against Medford.
