WAUSAU – The Marshfield girls soccer team pushed across three goals in the second half and improved to 2-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference with a 3-0 shutout of Wausau East on Thursday at East High School.

Freshman Darian Molter scored a pair of goals and Emily Brix added another as the Tigers improved to 2-1 overall and remain unbeaten after two Valley games, this coming a year after they did not win a conference tilt.

“At halftime the coaching staff told the girls to keep doing what they were doing and concentrate a little more on the traps and spacing,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Even though they outplayed East in the first half, they (the Lumberjacks) are the defending Valley champions and they cannot be taken lightly.”

Following a scoreless first half, Molter scored off an assist from Leah Cherney 7:18 into the second half to get the Tigers on the scoreboard.

Brix added her first varsity goal, off an assist from Walker Guzowski, at the 55-minute mark, and Molter finished off the scoring with an unassisted goal at 71:10.

“With a 2-0 start in the Valley, I cannot recall Marshfield starting the conference on such a high note,” Lindner said. “In this conference there are so many tough teams, that it is imperative to get out of the gate strong if we want to attain our goals for the season in conference and for seeding later in the year. It feels real good to be 2-0, but more consistency is what we are striving for as we progress thru the season.”

Lindner pointed out the two straight shutouts to start the Valley season (Marshfield beat Wausau West 2-0 on Tuesday) is due to the Tigers’ defensive play, led by seniors Alyssa Brenner and Sarah Wolff. Aislinn Koehler, Megan Marotz and Cherney also led the charge as goalie Kassi Todryk did not have to make one save for the second straight game. East had just two shots on goal.

Marshfield hosts Medford in a nonconference game Friday at Griese Park, then returns to Wausau to play in the Wausau West Invitational on Saturday.
