WESTON – The Marshfield girls soccer team saw its win streak end at four games, losing 5-0 to Wisconsin Valley Conference rival D.C. Everest on Thursday night at D.C. Everest Middle School.
D.C. Everest scored five goals on only eight shots in the first half, the first two coming 19 seconds apart and the final three coming in an eight-minute stretch later in the half.
“The shots were just not defended very well as we allowed the Evergreens too much space, and a good quality team as they are made nice traps and got off shots before the defense could react,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said.
“We were just not on in the first half and I believe it was as much to do with us not playing up to our abilities as it was meeting a quality opponent.”
Kelsey Gilmore scored the game’s first goal at the 9:55 mark and 19 seconds later Mali Theiss scored to give D.C. Everest (5-2, 2-0 WVC) an early 2-0 lead.
Gretchen Murphy added two goals and Rachalle Belott added another to give the Evergreens a 5-0 lead with 6:17 to go before halftime.
Marshfield managed eight shots in the game, four of which were saved by Monica Mynsberge.
Kassi Todryk had three saves and Naomi Crump had four in goal for the Tigers (4-2, 3-1 WVC).
“This will be a good learning experience for the girls and they can come away and work harder on things or walk away with their heads down,” Lindner said. “I believe we will take away some valuable lessons from this game and strive to improve where we let down a little bit tonight.”
The Tigers return to action April 28 at Stevens Point.
