STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield girls soccer team suffered its second straight loss, dropping a tight 2-1 decision to Stevens Point Area Senior High on Thursday night in a battle of Wisconsin Valley Conference leaders.
After a scoreless first half, Marshfield scored first when Allison Gruen scored off an assist by Emily Haws three minutes into the second half.
The lead was shortlived, however, as Eden Willoughby scored for SPASH shortly after Gruen’s goal, and she added another at the 59:03 mark to give the Panthers the lead.
“We played an awesome first half when SPASH had three point-blank shots either deflected or hit off the posts,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Maddie Smith and Leah Cherney were asked to shadow two of SPASH’s playmakers and did a super job all night.”
SPASH (7-1, 4-1 Wisconsin Valley Conference) outshot the Tigers 11-5, and Kassi Todryk made four saves in goal for Marshfield.
The Tigers had to play short-handed after Walker Guzowski and Taylor Asplin left with injuries, which Lindner said had a negative effect on the team.
Marshfield (4-3 overall, 3-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference) plays at Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday.
