MERRILL – Merrill scored five runs in the fifth inning to erase a small Marshfield lead and go on to a 7-2 win over The Tigers on Thursday in a Wisconsin Valley Conference softball game.

Katie Treankler doubled and scored on a single by Jenny Krokstrom to give Marshfield a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth.

The lead was short-lived as Merrill’s bats came alive in the bottom of the frame. The Bluejays (6-3, 4-1 Wisconsin Valley Conference) ripped three triples and two singles in the inning, and Marshfield committed its lone error of the game to help Merrill plate five runs.

The Tigers (1-6, 0-6 WVC) got one closer with a run in the sixth, but Merrill responded with two more in the bottom of the innings. Bluejays pitcher Aly Brandvold slammed the door on a four-hit, complete-game victory. She struck out three and walked two.

“They came up with some big hits and were able to get some runs across in that fifth inning,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “We only had one error, but it was a timely mistake and it helped them get a few more runs.”

Rhiannon Baierl took the loss for Marshfield, walking three and striking out two.

Marshfield hosts Black River Falls in a nonconference game Monday and returns to Wisconsin Valley action Tuesday at Wausau East.
