WESTON – D.C. Everest scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and Marshfield chipped away, but couldn’t quite make a full comeback, losing to the Evergreens 4-2 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference softball game Thursday.
Megan Mathies scattered seven hits and did not walk a batter to earn the complete-game victory for the Evergreens (13-2, 8-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference).
Marshfield struck from a run in the second as Katie Treankler doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Kristin Kniech. The Tigers cut the deficit in half in the sixth when Lindsey Duerr singled, went to third on a Rhiannon Baierl single, and scored on a groundout by Sara Sturomski.
However, the Tigers couldn’t get any closer and dropped their 10th-straight WVC game to fall to 3-11 overall and 0-10 in the Valley.
“They led off with two walks and had three hits to score their four runs,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “After that Rhiannon settled down and pitched a real good game. Our defense made some nice plays that we had struggled with earlier in the season.
“We had runners on and couldn’t come up with the big hits again. It’s still a work in progress. We just have to get over that hump.”
Marshfield plays a nonconference doubleheader at La Crosse Logan on Saturday and wraps up its regular season with home games against Stevens Point on Tuesday and Wausau West on May 26.
