AUBURNDALE – Auburndale led early before Wausau Newman Catholic ran away with a 9-1 win in a Marawood Conference South Division baseball game Thursday at Auburndale High School.
Auburndale led 1-0 after scoring a run in the bottom of the second. Newman responded with a pair of runs in the third and four more in the fourth to take a commanding 6-1 lead. The Cardinals added one more in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Jesse Brokish, Tony Altmann, Kyle Willfahrt and Jake Schar each had singles to account for the Apaches’ four hits.
Austin Hawkins suffered the loss, giving up three hits, six runs and five walks in three innings. He struck out three.
Auburndale falls to 1-13 and 1-11 in the Marawood South. Newman keeps pace with Marathon for the conference championship, improving to 12-3 and 10-3 in conference. The Cardinals are one-half game behind the Raiders for first in the conference standings.
