Greenwood topples Spencer, wraps up at least a share of Cloverbelt East softball title

SPENCER – Greenwood scored five runs in the fifth to erase an early Spencer lead and scored three more runs over the final two innings to beat the Rockets 9-6 in a pivotal Cloverbelt Conference East Division softball game Monday at SPREC Field.

The game was scheduled to be played at Greenwood but was moved to Spencer due to poor field conditions.

The win secures a tie for the Cloverbelt East championship for Greenwood. The Indians finish the conference season at 13-3 and are one-half game ahead of 12-3 Spencer. The Rockets wrap up their Cloverbelt season Tuesday at Gilman.

Taylan Johnson was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI for Greenwood.

Spencer had seven hits, two by pitcher Nicole Bruss, who also knocked in a pair of runs. Bruss took the loss, giving up seven earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. She struck out four and walked eight.

Katie Smith grabbed the win for the Indians, giving up four earned runs and three walks in a complete-game effort.
