WESTON – John Safford was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team to a 5-3 win over the Everest Merchants in their season opener Wednesday night.
Marshfield opened up a 5-2 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Everest scored once in the bottom of the sixth before Jordan Southworth, Lucious Messerschmidt and Howie Heinrich each tossed a shutout inning to close out the victory.
Cain Trunkel earned the win for the Chaps, striking out two and walking five in five innings.
