SPARTA – Howie Heinrich tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team to a 1-0 win in the opening game of a doubleheader Sunday over Sparta Miller.
Sparta knocked off Marshfield 9-8 in 11 innings in the nightcap to send the Chaps (3-1) to their first loss of the season.
In the opener, Heinrich struck out five and walked two to earn the seven-inning, complete-game victory.
Marshfield had only two hits as well, but managed a run in the third inning and it proved to be enough.
In the second game, Sparta pounded out 18 hits and took advantage of six Chaparrals errors.
Heinrich and Chuck Brehm each scored a pair of runs in the loss for Marshfield.
Brehm was called on to pitch six innings of relief in Game 2, giving up nine hits and six walks. He struck out six.
The Chaparrals host Plover on Wednesday, the first of a four-game home stand. Marshfield also hosts Tilden on Thursday and Sparta for a doubleheader on Saturday.
