LOYAL – The Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Catholic wrestling team had three athletes reach the championship round of Saturday’s Cloverbelt Conference tournament at Loyal High School, and one, Danny Schubert, came out victorious.
Schubert won by technical fall over Aaron Philson of Stanley-Boyd/Thorp 16-0 to capture the 135-pound championship.
Based on six top-three finishes, Spencer/Columbus finished third in the team standings with 177.5 points, just one point behind Abbotsford/Colby, which was second. Cadott won the team title in dominating fashion with 231 points and had five individual champions.
In the other two championship matches for the Rockets, Tye Ackman lost a close match to Gage Burish of Cadott 6-4 at 160 pounds and Josh Werstovshek was pinned in 5:32 at 215 pounds by Steve Chojnacki of Stanley-Boyd/Thorp.
Austin Mahoney (145), Jake Welsch (152) and Luke Bump (171) won third-place matches for the Rockets, while Ashley Stini (103), Brady Zais (112), James Rogers (140) and Nick Vaughan (189) finished fourth.
Spencer/Columbus will take part in the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament at Phillips next Saturday.
