AUBURNDALE – Auburndale had Stratford on the ropes but a touchdown late in the first half and a stout defensive performance in the second half led the Tigers to a 32-12 victory and the Marawood Conference and season opener for both football teams Friday night at Auburndale High School.
Auburndale quarterback Blake Anderson tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Austin Hawkins in the second quarter to give the Apaches a 12-7 lead, but Stratford quarterback Nolan Bargender scored on a one-yard run with just 1 second left in the first half to put the Tigers ahead and their defense did the rest.
The Tigers shutout Auburndale in the second half and Stratford scored three touchdowns, including two by running back Travis Urlaub to pull away.
Stratford gained 492 yards of offense and had three scoring plays of 63 yards or more.
Urlaub and Eli Temanson led a balanced Stratford rushing attack. Urlaub had 148 yards and two touchdowns and Temanson rushed just six times for 130 yards and a score.
Bargender added 163 yards through the air, including an 85-yard touchdown pass to Derek Austin in the fourth quarter.
Anderson completed 16 of 33 pass from 270 yards for Auburndale. Hawkins led the receiving corps with six catches for 155 yards and the two second-quarter touchdowns.
Stratford hosts Pittsville and Auburndale plays at Marathon on Aug. 26.
