SUN PRAIRIE – The Marshfield boys soccer team hung close for a while, but in the end Sun Prairie was just too fast for the Tigers.

Mahamad Deukuray scored three goals in breakaways over a 20-minute period in the second half to help the Cardinals pull away from Marshfield in a 5-0 win in the nonconference game on Monday.

Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said he was pleased with the fight the Tigers showed, despite falling to 0-2 on the young season.

“I give the kids a lot of credit for not giving up,” Todryk said. “We had a scoring opportunity at the 65-minute mark (down 3-0) and had a goal taken away by a hand-ball call, but we continued fighting and fighting hard. Sun Prairie was a very fast team, they have a lot of speed. The defense kept up with them pretty well, but a couple of mistakes here and there and they came away with some goals.”

Marshfield opens its Wisconsin Valley Conference season on Tuesday at Wisconsin Rapids, and Todryk said the Tigers just need a taste of offensive success to get things rolling.

“We just need to get a ball in the back of the net and get some momentum going our way,” Todryk said. “Hopefully we can muster up some offense.”

Erik Holm had eight saves in the first half and Trenton Todryk had five in the second half for the Tigers.
