MARSHFIELD – Stevens Point scored three goals in a span of 5:10 in the first half and three more in a span of 11 minutes in the second half to beat Marshfield 6-2 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer game Tuesday at Griese Park.

John Grant scored twice and Marshall Bell tallied a goal between the 15:59 and 21:09 marks of the first half to put Stevens Point ahead 3-0.

Marshfield played even the rest of the half, then put together a rally.

Matt McCann and Eli Oba scored in the first 6:43 of the second half to get the Tigers within a goal.

It was the Panthers’ time to regroup, and they did, squelching a few scoring opportunities by Marshfield in the next 10 minutes and then putting the game away.

Michael Weber scored twice and Hunter Peel added a goal between the 64:40 and 75:37 marks to wrap up the scoring. Stevens Point remains in first place in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, improving to 5-1 (11-3 overall). Marshfield falls to 2-7-2 and 2-4 in the Valley.

“We regrouped at halftime and we were only down 3-2 with 7 minutes gone in the second half,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “We had two beautiful crosses and headballs to get back in it.

“We had some other scoring opportunities, but SPASH was able to regain control and scored three goals within 10 minutes.

“We came out strong in the second half and showed what we were capable of doing, we just have to do it for an entire half.”

Marshfield hosts Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Griese Park.
