ABBOTSFORD – The Spencer volleyball team posted a 6-1 record to win the Bud Nelson Invitational on Saturday at Abbotsford High School.
The Rockets tied Colby for first place in the round-robin tournament, but was awarded the championship based on its 2-0 sweep of the Hornets.
Spencer swept its six wins against Loyal, Wisconsin Valley Lutheran, Pittsville, Abbotsford, Colby and Stratford. The Rockets lost a 2-1 decision to Waupaca 25-18, 17-25, 23-21.
Courtney Schulz had 44 kills and 12 blocks, and Tara Matter had 41 kills and five blocks to lead Spencer. Setter Kyleigh Hebert had 84 assists in the seven matches.
“One poor game cost us a perfect day,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “We really pulled things together after the Waupaca match. Courtney Schulz and Tara Matter really controlled the next play all day. We really frustrated teams with solid defense.”
Dani Johnson led the Rockets’ defense with 72 digs and Alicia Endreas had 41 digs and a team-high 11 service aces.
Spencer (21-5 overall, 4-1 Cloverbelt East) returns to conference action Tuesday at home against Granton.
