SPENCER – The Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Catholic football team trailed early but rallied with four unanswered touchdowns to knock off Altoona 28-7 in a Cloverbelt Conference game Friday night at Spencer High School.
The win keeps the Rockets’ WIAA playoff hopes alive as they improve to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the Cloverbelt. The Rockets would secure a playoff berth with wins in their final two games against Neillsville and Colby. If Spencer/Columbus would go 1-1, it would be considered for a postseason spot based on a 4-4 conference record.
Altoona took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter before the Rockets got their offense rolling.
Wyatt Phillips and Charlie Mayeux scored on touchdown runs of 5 and 2 yards, respectively, to put the Rockets up 14-7 at halftime.
Phillips had a 49-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and Mayeux added a 3-yard score to provide the final scoring.
Spencer/Columbus outgained the Railroaders (2-5, 1-5 Cloverbelt) 356-168 and were helped by 11 Altoona penalties.
Both Mayeux (128) and Phillips (118) topped the 100-yard mark rushing for Spencer/Columbus. The Rockets totaled 289 yards rushing on 48 carries.
