STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield volleyball team came into the second Wisconsin Valley Conference tournament of the season with a chance to put itself in position to win a conference title.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, they came up just short.

Marshfield lost to Merrill 3-0 (25-12, 26-24, 25-18) before rebounding to beat Stevens Point (25-16, 25-12, 25-22) to improve to 7-3 in the conference.

The Tigers trailed Merrill by one game and Stevens Point by one-half game entering the tournament.

“We knew going into today that it was very important to play well since we were meeting the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the conference back-to-back,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “We would have liked to play better against Merrill, but we really did a good job letting that first loss go and playing well against SPASH.”

Tiffany Stargardt once again led the Tigers’ attack with 27 kills and 24 digs in the two matches. Darian Molter added 31 digs, Courtney Bauer had 13 kills and setters Mary Wolff and Tori Nanstad had 31 and 28 assists, respectively.

Marshfield closes out its regular season with matches at Wausau East on Tuesday and at Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday.
