HUDSON – Marshfield boys soccer coach Ron Todryk had hoped for continued improvement from his relatively young team as the 2011 season went on.

The Tigers did improve, but in the end, playing without sophomore midfielder Austin Gilbert, they couldn’t find enough offense to continue their season.

Hudson scored a pair of goals in a 3-minute stretch of the second half to oust Marshfield 2-0 in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal on Tuesday night.

Rocky Harmen scored at the 69:19 mark and assisted on Henry Brose’s goal 3:20 later to lift Hudson (9-11) into a regional final matchup with No. 1 seed Eau Claire Memorial on Thursday at Memorial.

Marshfield, which had just one shot on goal, ends its season with a 7-11-2 record.

“Their passing game was good,” Todryk said. “They worked the ball around us. Our defense hung in there tough. We spent the majority of the game playing in our half of the field.”

Todryk said Marshfield had a couple of scoring opportunities, once when Hudson goalkeeper Mitch Rosiejka saved a rocket from Nick Guzowski near the end of the first half, and another when Matt McCann was just high on a shot early in the second half.

Marshfield’s defense was solid throughout the season, but the offense was sporadic. However, from the beginning of the season until the end, Todryk was more than pleased with the Tigers’ improvement.

“We improved every game, improvement in passing game, our forwards starting shooting more, midfielders started to shoot more,” Todryk said. “We had a fairly young team out there and those guys matured quite well. I was pleased with the way we hung tough today. One thing that does hurt us lost Austin Gilbert last few games. He was a sparkplug out there. He had stepped up in last two victories against Merrill and D.C. Everest. Matt McCann, another sophomore, in the center was our go-to guy.”
