MARSHFIELD – Colby wrapped up an undefeated regular season, whipping Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Catholic 35-0 in Columbus’ homecoming game Friday night at Beell Stadium in Marshfield.
The Hornets won the Cloverbelt Conference title with a perfect 8-0 record and hold a 9-0 mark overall. Spencer/Columbus falls to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
With the .500 record in conference play, the Rockets are playoff eligible. The WIAA considers teams that finish at .500 in its conference for the playoffs, but only teams with records about .500 are guaranteed a spot. Spencer/Columbus finished 4-4 in the Cloverbelt for the third straight season. The Rockets were left out of the playoffs the past two seasons despite the .500 record.
The WIAA playoff field will be announced Monday afternoon.
Colby outgained Spencer/Columbus 234-122, holding the Rockets to just 21 yards passing and 101 yards rushing on 32 carries.
Zach Peissig led a balanced attack for the Hornets, rushing for 74 yards and scoring on touchdown runs of 1, 3, and 3 yards for Colby’s middle three touchdowns.
Aaron Koerner tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Meyer for the Hornets’ first score, and Brandon Wickersham finished off the scoring with a 40-yard punt return in the fourth quarter.
Charlie Mayeux had 56 yards rushing on 13 carries and Jordan Buss complete 4 of 12 passes for 21 yards and ran for 22 yards.
