STEVENS POINT – The Stevens Point boys cross country team won its 24th straight Wisconsin Valley Conference Meet title on Saturday, but it sure wasn’t easy.
The Panthers bested D.C. Everest by just two points to take its 24th WVC boys team title in a row, and 34th in the last 35 years, at the conference meet at Standing Rocks County Park.
SPASH’s Michael Larson won the boys meet in 16:12 and all five Panthers finished in the top 11 to give them the title. D.C. Everest had all five of its runners finish in the top 13, led by Jacob Dirkman and Sam Anderson, who finished second and third.
Marshfield took fourth behind Wausau East with 133 points. Senior Adam Voss took 12th in 17:20 and Nolan Redetzke was 15th in 17:25 to earn all-conference honors.
“I was very pleased with the varsity runners today,” Marshfield coach Dan Akin said. “They really ran well and our team scores show that. Our conference is very strong this year and it showed today. I am very happy to see Adam Voss and Nolan earn their awards. They have both had marvelous seasons and I look for great efforts from them next week at sectionals.”
The Marshfield girls team, running without its top runner Rebecca Voss, finished fifth with 152 points. Leah Cherney, Melissa Brix and Sara Fuller finished 25th through 27th for the Tigers.
“The top five girls all finished within a minute of each other and that was key,” Akin said. “Leah was our leader today with Melissa and Sara right behind her. Melissa Brix and Dani Sopiarz have both made a strong surge the last three weeks.”
Wausau West, which finished second the last two years to Wausau East, nipped the Lumberjacks by two points to win its first ever WVC girls cross country title.
Ashley Eckhoff of Wausau East won the girls race in 14:52, nine seconds ahead of West’s Sarah Poirier and 14 seconds in front of West’s Marissa Matushak.
Marshfield will compete at the WIAA Division 1 Sectional next Saturday at Nine Mile Forest in Rib Mountain.
