SPENCER – Spencer volleyball coach Buff Heller said following Tuesday’s win that the Rockets would have their hands full playing a familiar opponent in Neillsville in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal.
He was right. The Rockets survived a five-set match, outlasting Neillsville 17-25, 25-18, 25-18, 21-25, 15-7 on Thursday to move on to a WIAA regional final Saturday against Auburndale. Game time is 7 p.m. at Spencer High School.
Courtney Schulz had 17 kills and five blocks, Tara Matter added 15 kills and setter Kyleigh Hebert had 45 assists to lead the Spencer offense.
“It was the most exciting match I have ever been a part of,” Heller said. “Our two big hitters, Schulz and Matter, really made the difference. Once our passes were on, we were tough to stop.”
Dani Johnson had 28 digs and Alicia Endreas added 17 to lead Spencer defensively.
Auburndale swept Spencer in a regional semifinal last year on its way to an appearance in the WIAA state tournament.
