RIB MOUNTAIN – Marshfield senior Adam Voss came up just short of a state meet berth on Saturday at the WIAA Division 1 Cross Country Sectional at Nine Mile Forest Recreation Area.
Voss finished in 14th place with a time of 17:07.2, 15.3 seconds behind the final individual state qualifying spot won by Alexander Buss of Shawano.
The top two teams and top five individuals not on those two teams qualified for the WIAA State Cross Country Championships next Saturday at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
Stevens Point and D.C. Everest dominated the top 10 with seven combined finishers to take the top two team slots.
Michael Larson of Stevens Point won the boys race in 16:07.0, 1.4 seconds ahead of D.C. Everest’s Jacob Dirkman.
Marshfield finished seventh in the team standings. Nolan Redetzke was the Tigers’ next finisher, taking 29th in 17:56.3.
The Tigers’ girls were also shutout of any state berths. Running without their top runner, Rebecca Voss, who was lost to a leg injury just before the Wisconsin Valley Conference Meet, the Tigers finished in eighth place.
Wausau West and Wausau East took the top two team spots and will move on to the state meet.
Ashley Eckhoff of Wausau East won the girls meet in 14:50.7, nearly 14 seconds ahead of Sarah Poirier of Wausau West.
Sara Fuller was 30th in 16:41.4 and Leah Cherney took 36th in 16:54.2 for Marshfield’s top two performances.
