COLBY – The Stratford football team gave undefeated Colby a run but in the end the Hornets held on to a 28-13 win in a WIAA Division 5 Level 2 playoff game Saturday at Colby High School.
Stratford, which won a Level 1 game over Grantsburg 39-7, finishes its season with a 7-4 record.
Colby (11-0) moves on to a Level 3 game next Friday or Saturday against Stanley-Boyd (8-3). The game time, date and site will be announced Sunday or Monday.
Colby eased out to a 28-0 lead in the third quarter before the Tigers tried to mount a comeback.
Derek Austin caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Drew Spaeth in the third quarter and Greg Belter scored on a 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth, but it wasn’t nearly enough for the Tigers.
Spaeth had a solid game for the Tigers in only his fourth varsity start. He completed 12 of 23 passes for 171 yards, but threw two interceptions. Austin caught seven balls for 121 yards.
Colby are looking to make it to Madison for the third time in four years. The Hornets won the 2008 Division 5 title and lost in the championship game last season.
