AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale girls basketball team came into this week with the task of facing the top three teams in the Marawood Conference South Division next up on its schedule.
The Apaches beat Edgar move into sole possession of third place, and on Friday, Auburndale knocked off conference co-leader Wisconsin Rapdis Assumption with a dominating defensive performance, 37-23.
Assumption, ranked No. 3 in the state in Division 4 by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association, were just 6 of 38 shooting from the floor in losing for just the second time this season (15-2, 9-2 Marawood South).
Auburndale (12-5, 8-3 Marawood South) made just nine field goals, but were 17 of 26 from the free-throw line and outscored Assumption 17-7 in the fourth quarter to win for the fifth straight time and for the eighth time in its last nine games.
“The girls were able to handle the tough Assumption defense all game,” Auburndale coach Corey Manlick said.
Assumption led 12-11 at halftime before the Apaches outscored the Royals 9-4 in the third quarter to take the lead. In the fourth, Kayleigh Kundinger and Sam Karl each hit all four of their free throw attempts, and Kelly Tomfohrde was four of eight from the line and made the Apaches’ only basket in the quarter.
Tomfohrde scored 10 points and Karl finished with nine to lead the Apaches.
Auburndale plays a nonconference game at Greenwood on Tuesday, then returns to face the No. 2-ranked Division 4 team in the state and Marawood South leader Wausau Newman at home on Thursday.
