MOSINEE – Mitch Hertel, Brandon Baltus, Kane Seubert, Justin Sternweis and Tom Gersham nailed down pins to lead the Marshfield wrestling team to a 51-22 nonconference win over Mosinee in its 2011-12 season opener Thursday night at Mosinee High School.

Marshfield trailed after six matches before winning seven of the final eight matches, four by pin.

Sternweis, a 2011 state tournament qualifier, pinned Adam Redeman at 1:16 of the 182-pound match which was one of four pins by the Tigers that came in the first period. Gershman had the fastest, that coming in 53 seconds of the 195-pound match.

Nine of the 14 wrestlers in Marshfield’s lineup wrestled their first varsity match on Thursday as the Tigers look to replace seven athletes that graduated.

“I am real happy with how the first dual of the season went,” Marshfield coach Don Lang said. “We are a very young team this year with many freshman and sophomores in the lineup. We have a very good foundation to build off of.”

Marshfield wrestles at the Campbellsport Invitational on Saturday before opening its Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meet season next Thursday at Wausau West.
