Pittsville sends Stratford girls basketball team to first loss

STRATFORD – Pittsville outscored Stratford by eight in the third quarter and that proved enough as the Panthers won the Marawood Conference South Division opener for both teams 51-45 on Tuesday night at Stratford High School.

Stratford led 19-18 at halftime before the Panthers used a 16-8 run in the third to open up a seven-point lead. The Tigers didn’t recover.

Hannah Schmitt scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Stratford, which falls to 1-1.

Hannah Marti had 11 points and seven rebounds, Marissa Ortner tossed in 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Tasha Vogel added 10 points to lead a balanced attack for the Panthers (2-3).

Sara Griesbach added eight points and Brooke Schultze had six points and five rebounds for the Tigers.

Stratford returns to action next Tuesday at Marathon.
