PHILLIPS – The Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Catholic and Stratford wrestling teams combined for four championships and nine sectional qualifiers in all on Saturday at the WIAA Division 3 regional at Phillips High School.
Tye Ackman (160 pounds) and Josh Werstovshek (215) won regional titles for Spencer/Columbus, which finished second as a team with 210 points. Cadott won the team title with 247.5 points.
Stratford was third with 164 points on the strength of three regional champions – Ben Robers at 171, Luke Radke at 189 and Indy Spindler at 285.
Spencer/Columbus had three wrestlers finish second – James Rogers (140), Luke Bump (171) and Aaron Dunbar (135). The top two in each weight class moves on to next Saturday’s sectional at Osseo-Fairchild.
Mark Marquardt (145) was second for the Tigers, giving Stratford four sectional qualifiers.
“We wrestled very well today. We stayed in good position and finished the little things,” Spencer/Columbus coach Adam Vaughan said. “Our seniors stepped up and won the big matches they needed to, to get to the next
level.
“Our younger guys wrestled the third-place matches competitive, which helped us finish second as a team. Those are the matches that help keep our team competitive.”
For Stratford, Robers (34-5) beat Bump 10-4 in the 171-pound championship; Radke (34-7) pinned Loyal’s Andrew Prusinski in 2:36 to grab the 189-pound title; and Spindler improved to 39-3 on the season, pinning Chris McConville of Cadott just 32 seconds into the 285-pound championship match. Spindler also won with a first-period pin in his semifinal match.
Ackman (32-6) narrowly defeated Gage Burish of Cadott 7-6 to win the 160-pound title for the Rockets.
Werstovshek (32-6) rolled at 215 pounds, pinning Devon Wendt in 45 seconds to win the championship match. Werstovshek had a first-period pin in his semifinal match as well.
